The space diamond is called ‘Lucy’ after The Beatles’ song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and was discovered by astronomers at the University of Manchester.
The flickering flame of a candle is often described as diamond-like. Indeed, this may not just be poetic license – according to Wuzong Zhou, a professor of chemistry at the University of St Andrews, and the candle flame contains around 1.5 million tiny diamonds.
According to Wuzong Zhou, “We discovered that a single candle flame can produce about 1018 diamond nano particles per second, or about 3×1016 kg per year, corresponding to about 10 million carats or 2 million troy ounces of diamonds being produced by a single candle each year.”
